SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – It’s been a perfect start to the season for the Salem Football team. The Quakers are undefeated through the first 7 weeks, and are coming off a 36-0 shutout of Minerva last Friday night. And in that victory, we found a Big 22 Contender.
It didn’t take long for the Quakers to find the endzone on Friday. Junior Wide Receiver Jake Humeniuk exposed a weakness in that Minerva secondary.. He reeled in three touchdown passes….all of which came in the first quarter. The 6-3 wideout finished with 5 catches for 90 yards… helping Salem remain unbeaten.
His says he uses his tall stature to his advantage.
“We just size up everybody and we haven’t seen very many big corners out there guarding me. It’s hard to guard someone this tall. So, it’s what i do best honestly,” he said.
Salem Head Coach Ron Johnson agrees. “Jake’s got exceptional ball skills. He judges the flight of the ball and he high-points it as well as anybody that I’ve coached. He understands how to use his body and gain leverage on a defender. We’re fortunate to have a quarterback that can give him the opportunities to make plays.”
Here are several other players that caught the attention of Sports Team 27 in Week 7.
LaBrae Senior Keevon Harris. He racked up over 200 yards rushing in their route of Newton Falls.
Canfield Senior C.J. Frost scored 4 times, and ran for 251 yards against Niles.
No one had a bigger week than East Palestine Senior Josh Pickett. Not only did his Bulldogs upset previously undefeated Crestview., but Pickett led the way with 255 yards rushing, and 4 total touchdowns.
