Tuesday’s Musings around the area
Champion (3-4)
…The Golden Flashes must gain momentum after falling to Liberty (10-0) last week. Champion has games against Campbell, Lakeview and Brookfield left on their schedule. Eric Fenstermaker is 74 rushing yards short of 500 for the year (500).

Columbiana (6-1)
…The Clippers appear to be secured with their positioning in Division VI, Region 19 after last week’s 49-24 win over Springfield. Columbiana has scored 42 points or more in each of their last four contests. Junior quarterback Mitch Davidson has run for 755 yards (13 TDs) and thrown for 1774 more (18 TDs). His targets have to be happy as Jake Ward has caught 35 passes (728 yards, 8 TDs), Dalton Miller has hauled in 30 (466 yards, 4 TDs) and Cooper Smith has snagged 20 (30 yards, 2 TDs). Keenan Green leads the team with 70 tackles and 6 sacks.

Crestview (6-1)
…After being stunned by East Palestine (47-34) this past week, the Rebels will take on South Range this Friday. Zack Hicks has topped the 1,000-yard mark with 1021 yards and 18 TDs on the ground. Hicks also has been efficient punting the ball as he has an average of 35.3 on 12 attempts. Spencer Desalvo has tossed 7 TDs (706 yards) and has run in 8 more (663 yards). Jordan Murphy has 4 sacks.

Greenville (5-1)
…The Trojans began the season with a 5-0 mark before falling to Hickory last week (28-9). Senior ball carrier Hunter Hause is 161 yards shy of the 1,000-yard mark (839 yards, 6 TDS). Gage Gladysz has thrown for 389 yards and run for another 201. Brady Kalchthaler has sacked opposing quarterbacks – 4 times this season.

Grove City (1-5)
…The Eagles got into the win column following their week five victory over Titusville (34-6). Coach Sam Mowrey’s group has lost the football 13 times through 6 games (7 interceptions, 6 fumbles). Kameron Patterson has completed 59.9% of his tosses (91-152) while throwing for 1130 yards and 8 scores. Nick Davies (304), Brayden Martin (279) and A.J. Turner (201) have all surpassed 200 yards receiving. Davies also has 3 interceptions on defense.

Hickory (5-1)
…The Hornets’ posted their 4th win in a row last Friday when they defeated Greenville (28-9). Junior Chuck Carr has run for 8.4 yards per carry this season (1041 yards, 17 TDs). Luke Brennan has completed 56.8% of his passes (50-88) for 794 yards. Joey Dejulia has caught 24 passes for 18.8 yards and 6 scores. Andrew Pryts has intercepted three passes this season.

Hubbard (5-2)
…After losing back-to-back contests with Lakeview (30-27) and Howland (34-20), Hubbard has rebounded nicely to register a pair of wins in a row (over Niles and Jefferson). These last few weeks will determine the Eagles’ fate as they must go to Struthers and East and have a home date with unbeaten Poland in week nine. George Hill is averaging 9.8 yards per carry as he’s 66 rushing yards shy of 1,000. Brandon Rios has bulldozed his way to 733 yards on the ground while scoring 9 TDs.

Jackson-Milton (5-2)
…After dropping two straight to Crestview (47-19) and McDonald (32-22), the Blue Jays righted the ship against Sebring this past Friday (46-13). Boy, would a win this week (against Western Reserve) do wonders for their resume moving into the first weekend of November. Joey Burnside is 22 yards shy of reaching the 1,000-yard plateau for the season rushing (978). Mike Assion is 105 passing yards from getting there as well (895 yards).

Lakeview, OH (5-2)
…Lakeview has a huge road test against unbeaten Poland this Friday. If the Bulldogs win, you can just about punch their ticket to week eleven. Over the last four weeks, the Bulldogs have defeated Jefferson and Hubbard. After Poland, home contests with Champion and Struthers are left on their schedule. QB Angelo Marino has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in passing (1094) even with missing last week’s game with Edgewood (41-13). Jatise Garrison (256) and Nick Boldt (240) have both eclipsed 200 yards receiving.

Lakeview, PA (3-3)
…This Friday is homecoming in Stoneboro when the Sailors welcome 0-6 Saegertown. Austin Rice has led Lakeview in rushing this season with his 779 yards and 8 scores. QB Jake Doddo is third in rushing with 276 and he leads team in tackles with 62 on defense. Tanner Reddick is second on the team in rushing (321) and is the top pass catcher (5 receptions, 124 yards).

Mercer (1-5)
…Since beginning the year with an impressive 41-14 victory over Eisenhower. The Mustangs have fallen to 1-5 after accumulating just a total of 25 points throughout that stretch. QB Eric Gawne has completed 6 passes in 6 games. The team, which relies on the run, has three players close to or has surpassed the 200-yard mark for the season (Jimmy Amon, 274; Austin Hall, 227; Josh Robertson, 194).

Newton Falls (0-7)
…The Tigers have struggled slowing down the opposition this season. They’ve permitted all but one opponent to score 42 points or more. QB Josh Walters has thrown for 1176 yards and he leads the team in rushing with 523 stripes (4 TDs). Derrick Backherms is 1-yard short of 400 for the season on the ground. Alex Ball (324) and Nate Harrah (320 yards) lead the Tigers in receiving yards. Colton Hunt has accumulated 79 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.

Niles (3-4)
…The Red Dragons have dropped two straight while allowing their opponents to score a total of 85 points. Tyler Srbinovich has thrown for 1,164 yards while completing 78 passes. Receivers Marlon Pearson and Jasson Faison have both been major contributors this year in the passing game. Pearson has snagged 34 balls for 594 yards and 8 touchdowns. Faison has compiled a stat line of 24 catches for 354 yards (2 TDs). David Palm is 15 tackles shy of 100 for the season.

Sharon (5-1)
…If it wasn’t for the forfeited week one matchup with Struthers, the Tigers would be undefeated. Senior signal caller Andrew Tomko has thrown 15 touchdown passes (1361 yards, 54.7%) while leading the team in rushing with 495 yards (7 TDs). Ziyon Strickland (28 catches, 530 yards, 7 TDs) and Zach Meszaros (23 catches, 269 yards) have been his favorite two targets this season so far. Damon Rudolph has 2 sacks and 72 tackles. Jaquan Waller has given opposing lines fits with his 8 quarterback takedowns.

South Range (5-2)
…Right in the Division 5, Region 15 mix once again, South Range will visit 6-1 Crestview this weekend which could be a preview of a playoff matchup in the not so distant future. The Raiders have been led by their quarterback Seth Morrow who has thrown for 443 yards (50.8%) and run for another 371 (7 TDs). Ethan Dominguez leads the team with 663 rushing yards. There are a trio of Raider runners who have gained 250 yards or more on the ground this season (Dominguez, 663; Morrow, 371; J.R. Renforth, 259).

Springfield (3-4)
…After a 2-0 start, the Tigers have won just once in their last five tries. With that said, the playoffs are still a possibility if they can get by East Palestine, Crestview and United. Graham Mincher is 28 passing yards short of 1,000 for the season. Cody Allen has proven to be his favorite target as he’s hauled in 34 passes for 435 yards (4 TDs). Frank Centofanti is 28 rushing yards short of 500.

Struthers (3-4)
…The Wildcats ended their four-game slide last week when they downed Campbell, 46-7. Now getting back into the playoff hunt will take wins over Hubbard and Lakeview in the last three weeks of the season. A.J. Musolino and Regal Reese have led Struthers’ rushing attack this season. Musolino has scored 9 touchdowns on the ground while amassing 462 yards. Reese has rushed for 444 (5 TDs). Musolino also has thrown just 2 interceptions over the course of his 92 attempts (745 yards, 7 TDs). Tekale Rushton (359 yards) and Dakota Senvisky (20 catches) have led the receiving corps.

United (2-5)
…The Golden Eagles have lost their last three contests, while competing against teams who have combined for a 15-6 record (McDonald, Crestview, South Range). The schedule eases up a bit but they still have the likes of Wellsville, East Palestine and Springfield on the docket. Colton Antram is 19 yards shy of reaching 500 for the season on the ground (481). QB Colton Graham has thrown just 1 interception out of 93 passing attempts.

West Middlesex (4-2)
…The Big Reds will try and make it two in a row when they travel to Cochranton this Friday. In West Middlesex last two road games, they’ve been outscored by a total of 79-6 by Farrell and Sharpsville. Luke Hemminger is averaging 6.9 yards per tote this season (70 attempts, 486 yards, 5 TDs). QB Nick Cannone has thrown for 708 yards on 52 completions. Josh Porterfield has accumulated 8 sacks and Dylan Long has intercepted 3 passes.

Western Reserve (5-2)
…Reserve has won their last four after a 1-2 start which saw the Devils lose those outings by a total of 17 points. Sitting on the brink of the playoffs in Division VI, Region 19 – Western Reserve can’t afford a hiccup now. Wyatt Larimer is just 93 passing yards short of 1,000 (61.6%, 10 TDs). Larimer (380 yards, 5 TDs) and Ted Smith (362 yards, 4 TDs) lead the Devils in rushing. Jeep DiCioccio has caught 13 passes for an average of 23.5.
