Prisoner who fled from hospital arrested with handcuff key

MCKEESPORT, Pa. (AP) – Authorities say a prisoner shackled to a hospital bed and guarded by a deputy in Pennsylvania managed to escape and was found more than 16 hours later with a key to his handcuffs.

Allegheny County Chief Deputy Kevin Kraus says the sheriff’s office is trying to determine how that happened.

Glassport police first arrested Alexander Erb after a domestic dispute, then took him to UPMC McKeesport hospital for treatment. He escaped at about 1 a.m. Monday.

The sheriff’s deputy was guarding him because Erb was wanted on an arrest warrant in another jurisdiction and was supposed to be transferred once he was discharged.

Erb was found in a McKeesport house about 2 miles away at about 5:30 p.m.

He is facing charges of escape and other crimes.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for him.
