SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – The sky is falling again in Salem. Actually, bricks from two buildings in the 300 block of East State Street started falling over the weekend, so the sidewalk in front of those buildings has been closed.

One building is a game shop; it’s still open. But the other one hasn’t been occupied for almost a year now.

The fire chief says both owners are aware of the situation and are taking immediate action.

This is a familiar scenario for people in Salem. In March, the city was dealing with the same issue with a tanning salon across the street.

The street was actually closed when those bricks began falling. The city ended up paying for demolition.

Mayor John Berlin says there are a lot of problems with buildings downtown and it’s up to the property owners to make repairs.

City council is proposing a maintenance code to address the problem.
