Late touchdown clinches Ursuline win over Boardman

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – With only three games remaining on the season, Boardman and Ursuline met Friday night, both positioning themselves for a run at the postseason. Trailing most of the game, Ursuline scored with :20 remaining in the game to take the lead and the game.

Facing a 4th and 1, the Spartans were able to get the Irish to jump off-sides giving them a new set of downs and they cashed in on the Ursuline mistake. Deep inside the redzone, J.R. Ryan  hit Travis Koontz in the endzone for the game’s first score, giving the Spartans the early 7-0 lead.

As time expired in the first half, Ursuline hit a field goal to get on the board.

In the second half, the Irish gained their first lead of the game when Jared Fabry connected with Daylen Harris for a touchdown, making it 10-7 Ursuline.

The Spartans reclaimed the lead minutes later on a Ryan to Koontz pass and catch, making it 14-10.

Boardman would increase their lead to 11 when Ryan connected on his third touchdown pass, this time 77 yards to Alex Duda to push the lead to 21-10.

In the fourth quarter, the Irish took over. With 9:11 remaining in the game Fabry found Anise Algahmee to get within four, 21-17.

Then, with :20 remaining in the game, Ursuline’s Kimauni Johnson punched it in from four yards out to give Ursuline the late lead.

A Boardman fumble with :02 remaining in the game would ice the game for Ursuline.

Ursuline (4-4) entered the game in 8th place in Division IV: Region 11, will take on their biggest rival in week nine when they take on Cardinal Mooney.

Boardman (4-4) entered the game in 7th place in Division II: Region 5, will host Austintown Fitch next Friday.
