BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Lily Pond at Mill Creek MetroParks is getting a face lift.
Work begins on the pond on Monday to add a new arrival area, drinking fountain and information kiosk. The area will be blocked off to pedestrians during the 10 weeks of construction.
When finished, a boardwalk will lead to an observation deck overlooking the pond. The trail around the pond will also be rehabbed — complete with a floating boardwalk and new bridge.
Lily Pond visitor Susan Callen-Miracle said the pond is a landmark in the community and improving upon it only helps the city’s image.
“I think that, you know, over the course of the history — since the 70s in this community — that it’s been a slow decline, and that any glimmer of hope, and especially the crown jewel of this area, in my opinion, is a very important thing.”
The rehab comes with a price tag of $344,000, but thanks to donations and fundraising efforts, the MetroParks’ share is only $74,000.
