New group embraces Youngstown Plan, promotes involvement

youngstown, ohio state takeover plan supported locally

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A new Youngstown community group has formed, embracing the Youngstown Plan which is now in effect.

The group calls itself “Youngstown Educational Solutions,” or YES. One of their leaders is former city school board member Tracey Winbush. They want the community to embrace the plan too.

Winbush says students, parents, community members and others need to work together to help the state Academic Distress Commission that will oversee the district. She says, “Whether it means parent conferences, whether it be communications, whether it be knowledge, understanding the standardized testing, understanding how to better help their child get to school, finding out what their needs are. Because every child learns differently.”

Leaders of the group say families and others can get involved simply by going to school board and Academic Distress Commission meetings and holding members of both boards accountable for their decisions.

Members of the Youngstown Board of Education threaten to appeal this week’s court ruling, allowing House Bill 70 to go into effect.
