YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Friends and family came together to wish Youngstown’s long-time fire investigator well in his new career: retirement.

Alvin Ware had been with the Youngstown Fire Department for more than 29 years. His last day with the department was October 2.

Ware started out as a fireman but became interested in fire investigations when Youngstown had a rash of stolen vehicle fires. He told WKBN that being a fireman was not his top career choice, however.

“First, I was more interested in becoming a police officer,” he said. “I been to the academy before I came to Youngstown. I started doing it down in Struthers part-time and liked it, so I took the test in Youngstown. I took police and fire, both tests at the same time and scored high on both. Got the call by the fire department first.”

Ware said he will not completely retire. He plans to teach a fire class at Choffin Career and Techinical Center.
