WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – Trumbull County’s law enforcement agencies have joined those speaking out against State Issue 3 on next month’s ballot.
On Tuesday morning, representatives from nearly every police department in the county, as well as members of the local drug task force, stood outside the Trumbull County Courthouse in Warren holding a banner urging voters to “just say ‘no’ to legalizing marijuana.”
Issue 3 would permit marijuana use and cultivation for recreational use by changing the Ohio Constitution.
“The legislation can’t tweak it, can’t change it. This is a constitutional amendment. As professionals here, we deal in data, and we’ve researched and got data from Colorado. It’s not working,” said Trumbull County Sheriff Chief Deputy Ernie Cook.
Leaders with the group Responsible Ohio, who support legalization, have said the data being used by opponents is not accurate. They say the changes would actually allow police to spend more time pursuing other crimes.
Local officers argue issue 3 would only create additional burdens on law enforcement.
