Man faces kidnapping for holding 2 Ohio firefighters hostage

SOUTH AMHERST, Ohio (AP) – An Ohio man who authorities say held two firefighters hostage at gunpoint faces kidnapping and felonious assault charges.

Fifty-three-year-old Roy Griffith Jr. is also charged with inducing panic and having a weapon while intoxicated. He appeared Thursday in Oberlin Municipal Court and is being held on $500,000 bond.

Eight firefighters responded Wednesday evening to a report of a brush fire behind Griffith’s house in South Amherst, about 35 miles west of Cleveland. Authorities say Griffith became agitated and took two firefighters hostage with a rifle.

The situation ended peacefully about two hours later. A Lorain County deputy sheriff says Griffith insisted he wasn’t going to hurt anyone and asked for beer and prescription medication during the standoff.

Court records don’t indicate whether Griffith has an attorney who can comment on the charges.
