Valley communities take steps to keep leaves out of landfills

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – As the leaves continue to fall across the Valley, there are ways to make sure you get rid of them properly.

One of the big goals is to keep the leaves out of landfills and make sure they are sent to composting facilities.

Several communities have vacuum services, others have bag service.

For the city of Youngstown, there are dates set up so bags of leaves are collected and sent to a top soil company.

Lou Vega with the Mahoning County Solid Waste Management District said the programs are essential to make sure leaves don’t end up in landfills.

“There is no reason for it to go into the landfill when it can be composted as soil additive,” Vega said.

Composting leaves and other biodegradable materials is encouraged in Mahoning County. Last year, more than 13,000 tons of materials were composted.
