Animal Charity: Adopt your next best friend

BOARDMAN TWP, Ohio (WKBN) – October is the American Humane Association’s “Adopt A Dog Month”. Mahoning County’s only local humane society has plenty of potential pets to choose from.

There are 140 animals housed at the Animal Charity Humane Society’s shelter on Market Street. Most are dogs and cats.

Society Director Shalyse Bolash says if you decide you want a pet, there’s one small step before getting approved. “We do a two week foster, just to make sure the dog is a good fit for the home,” says Bolash. “And after the two week trial, if it still works out, then they’re approved for adoption and they’ve signed the paperwork and they’re all theirs.”

Bolash says if you plan to adopt a cat, they ask that you “not” declaw them. That’s a very painful process for them.

An estimated 3 to 4 million animals are waiting in shelters for someone to give them a safe home each year.
