AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The second season of live horse racing began Friday at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Racecourse in Austintown.
A series of eight races began at 12:45 p.m., with 12 horses in each contest. Most races this year will have 10-12 horses in the field.
Track preparation begin early Friday morning ahead of practice runs that are held prior to the races.
High Hopes E Day won the first race as a 15-1 longshot, paying $35.40 to win.
Colonel Jordan led the field to the wire, winning the second race.
There are 13 barns on the property with more than 700 horses.
A daily purse of $90,000 will offered for the races. New this year is the Steel Valley Sprint on Nov. 23 with a purse of $200,000.
