MAGNOLIA, Ohio (WKBN) – Facing off in the opening round of the Division V, Region 15 playoffs, the East Palestine Bulldogs fell short of the second round, losing to Sandy Valley 28-14 on Friday night.

On the third play from scrimmage, the Cardinals’ Nelson Mozdan broke free of the Bulldog defense, taking it 85 yards for the game’s first points. A successful extra point made it 7-0 Sandy Valley.

With 7:00 remaining in the game’s opening quarter, Mozdan found Jacob Wagner on a 19 yard pass for the score. A successful point after increased the Cardinal lead to 14-0.

With time running out and going for it on fourth and five, Mozden found Wagner again on a 29 yard touchdown pass as time expired to make it 21-0 Sandy Valley heading into halftime.

With 5:47 remaining in the third quarter, the Cardinals mounted a 58 yard drive, capped off with a one yard Mozden touchdown run to increase the lead to 28-0 Sandy Valley.

With 1:00 remaining in the third quarter, the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard when Josh Pickett pulled down a Parker Sherry pass from 10 yards out to make it 28-7.

Sherry completed 19-30 passes for 187 yards and tow touchdowns and two interceptions.  He also rushed for 39 yards.  Josh Pickett finished with 40 rushing yards on the night.

Jarrod Figley caught 7 passes for 77 yards.  Ryan Ross caught 5 passes for 50 yards and a touchdown.

Then, with 5:22 remaining in the game, the Bulldogs cut into the Cardinal lead on a Ryan Ross touchdown catch making it 28-14, but East Palestine couldn’t cap off their comeback, falling by two scores.

Sandy Valley will move onto the second round where they will take on Canton Central Catholic.
