Local girls sending Christmas cheer to troops

Girl Scouts and American Legion girls chop trees for troops in Poland

POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – Troops stationed overseas for the holidays will get a little touch of home thanks to a local tree farm and some very cute volunteers.

Girls Scouts from Poland and American Heritage girls from Salem spent the morning chopping down Christmas trees at the Pioneer Trails Tree Farm in Poland.

The 12 trees will be sent to Kuwait as part of Operation Evergreen.

The students also wrote letters to the service men and women and made ornaments to go along with them.

“I’m sure it brings a little bit of home to them to have a live tree, just the smell of the tree and the homemade ornaments and things,” said Toni Bezdek of American Heritage Troop 2256.

Each tree costs around $160 to ship. That cost was off-set by donations from local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and churches.
