Mooney grad Kennedy nabs MVFC award

YSU kicker and Mooney grad Zak Kennedy prepares for a field goal against Missouri State

YOUNGSTOWN, OH (WKBN)-Youngstown State freshman placekicker Zak Kennedy was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced on Sunday. Kennedy’s 17 made field goals this season tie a school record with two regular-season games remaining.

Kennedy made a pair of field goals and was 5-of-6 on PAT attempts in the Penguins’ impressive 47-7 win over Missouri State yesterday. He made field goals of 20 and 43 yards in the game. His 43-yard kick in the fourth quarter was his 17th field goal made of the season, tying the school record for most in a season.

It is the seventh time in school history a kicker has made 17 FGs in a season. The only non-playoff season in which a kicker made 17 field goals was Paul McFadden in 1982.

Kennedy has made field goals in eight of nine games this season.

Illinois State wide receiver Anthony Warrum was named the Offensive Player of the Week, South Dakota’s Andrew Van Ginkel was named the Defensive Player of the Week and UNI quarterback Aaron Bailey was named the Newcomer of the Week.

The Penguins (5-4 and 3-3 in the MVFC) play their final home game of the regular season this Saturday against North Dakota State. Kickoff at Stambaugh Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
