Ohio State Highway Patrol: Driver in I-80 crash has passed away

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Donald Stephenson of Boardman, the driver of a passenger vehicle that collided with a commercial vehicle, passed away around 5:00 Sunday morning.

The accident occurred Saturday evening on Interstate 80.

The vehicles slid in front of the State Route 46 ramp, temporarily disabling it.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says Stephenson flat lined at the scene.

Sunday morning, an independent witness came forward telling OSP that they saw the tractor-trailer driver make an improper lane change.

According to OSP, the driver of that vehicle, Israel Chamizo of Doral, Florida, was arrested and charged with aggravated vehicular assault and vehicular manslaughter.

Stephenson and his passenger were both transported to St. Elizabeth’s Health Center in Youngstown Saturday night.

The passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries.
