YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown Mayor John McNally chose his appointment to the Youngstown City Schools’ Academic Distress Commission.
Barbara Brothers, retired professor and former dean of the College of Arts and Science at Youngstown State University, will assume the new role.
Brothers’ education career has spanned more than 40 years. She serves as chair of the League of Woman Voters’ Education Committee and on board positions at the Youngstown Symphony, YWCA and Citizens League of Youngstown.
“Dr. Brothers is a tireless advocate for public education, and I am thrilled that she has accepted my invitation to represent the entire city, including our students, parents and teachers on the Academic Distress Commission,” McNally said in a written statement.
With the passage of House Bill 70 earlier this year, a CEO will take over the school district. There will also be four others appointed to the distress commission — three of which will be appointed by the state superintendent and one to be appointed by School Board President Brenda Kimble.
Kimble’s pick has to be a teacher.
