YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Police are searching for a man who tried to steal a woman’s car by gunpoint in front of Payday Loans on Market Street.
Officers were sent to the store at 6:24 p.m. Thursday and met with a woman who said she was in the car in the parking lot with her four children. The window of her car, she said, was rolled down slightly.
The woman told police that a man walked up to the driver’s side of the car, pointed a handgun at her and said, “Give me your money, and give me your keys.”
She said she responded, “No, get out of here,” and the man then reached into the vehicle to unlock the car door.
After re-locking the door, she said the man reached inside again, unlocked the door and struck her in the head with the side of his firearm, throwing her out of the car onto the pavement. In the process, the woman’s children ran into Payday Loans, screaming, a Youngstown Police report states.
The woman told police that the man tried to drive away in her Kia Sportage. He could not, however, because the car was a manual transmission, and she said he did not know how to operate it. The man then ran away behind Life Skills High School, she said.
Police are reviewing security footage in the area. The suspect was described as as 5’6″, 190 pounds, who was wearing black pants, a black hooded sweatshirt and black stocking cap.
After officers left the area, the woman said she noticed $600 in cash and her checkbook were missing from the car.
