Bands pay tribute to police officer lost to ALS

A benefit for the family of Brian Newhard, who died of ALS, was held at The Federal in Youngstown.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Weeks after a local police officer lost his battle with ALS, the community is still rallying behind his family.

Saturday night’s benefit paid tribute to one of Sergeant Brian Newhard’s passions: music.

Six bands played in a show at the Federal in downtown Youngstown.

Proceeds will go directly to Newhard’s wife, Jenny, and their three children.

Jenny was at tonight’s show. Hearing the songs her husband used to play was bittersweet.

“He was a police officer for a long time but his other passion was playing in a band. Singing, that was sort of his way of relieving a lot of the stress of his job and he was awesome,” she said.

Brian’s brother, Gary, was part of the show, playing drums in one of the bands.
