BEAVER TWP., Ohio (WKBN) – A fire to a storage barn in Beaver Township led to the closure of State Route 165 at Detwiler Road on Tuesday afternoon.
The fire was first reported around 4 p.m., and heavy black smoke and flames could be seen shooting out from a wooded area, just a quarter mile from Route 165.
The fire was extinguished by firefighters, who contained it before it spread through the woods. Some dry leaves nearby did catch fire.
“It also put out quite a big grass fire that also had to be contained at the same time as the building was on fire, and it’s about an eighth of a mile off the road, so it presented some problems getting water back here initially,” said Beaver Township Fire Chief Russ Osborne.
The barn appears to be heavily damaged, and two tractors in it may have caused a small explosion.
A neighbor shot a home video of the fire, which was provided to WKBN. He said he heard popping sounds coming from the barn when firefighters arrived.
Because of the extensive damage, it is unlikely a cause will be determined.
The property was used by the owner as a place to hang out. There was a small house next to the shed with a bed and a computer inside.
Two of Beaver Township’s fire vehicles were stuck in the mud while on the scene, and they had to be towed.
