Free straw is given away to keep pets warm

Straw was passed out to pet owners in Girard to help keep their animals warm this winter.

GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) – We’ve been feeling colder temperatures this week, but don’t forget your animals can feel the cold too.

Legacy Dog Rescue and Never Muzzled gave out free straw to dog and cat owners.

People were lined up outside of Family Video in Girard at 11:00 Saturday morning.

Amanda Ligouri, co-founder of Never Muzzled, was helping to pass out the straw. She says that although animals should never be left out in the cold, straw can keep them warm and doesn’t get soggy in the snow.

“We don’t condone it, but we know it’s going to happen. People have outside dogs,” she said. “We recommend that we bring them inside when it gets bitter cold, but we want to at least help provide bedding and warmth for the animals people keep outside.”

More than half of the straw was gone by just 11:15 a.m.
