COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Every Monday morning of “Beat Michigan” week, Ohio State students wake up to a different looking campus. As they walk to class, they quickly see every letter “M” present on building signs, parking signs, bus stop signs, mailboxes, and even sewers have been covered by red tape.
Ohio State senior Aubrey Jenkins said, “I think it’s really cool, and I would like to do it, but I don’t know WHO does it!”
And that’s exactly how the stealthy students responsible for the unique tradition want it to stay…a campus mystery. Many students speculate what organizations might be responsible, but one student said she believes it’s an “invite only” tradition among the students who cover the M’s. No one could actually say they know who’s responsible for the tradition.
Ohio State senior Soujanya Chetluru said, “I’ve noticed the M’s being covered on campus during Michigan week since my freshman year, and they’ve just always been covered Monday morning. I don’t know who’s involved, but we don’t like to see M’s anywhere even in our writing on posters or on Facebook, so it’s just a neat tradition.”
Alex Rowland, a freshman on campus said, “It just shows our school pride, and it’s a great way to celebrate Michigan week.”
