Ohio mother who beat crying infant gets prison time

CINCINNATI (AP) – A 23-year-old southwest Ohio mother who admitted to punching her infant son because he was making it difficult for her to sleep is heading to prison.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Peek Gaddis was sentenced Monday to five years behind bars. She pleaded guilty to child endangering earlier this month.

Defense attorney James Schimanski says the Colerain Township woman feels “genuine remorse” for what happened. He says Gaddis has a history of mental health issues that contributed to her actions.

Prosecutors say she told police she punched her son several times in May. The infant suffered two skull fractures and several broken bones.

The boy, along with Gaddis’ two other children, have been removed from her custody and placed with relatives.
