2015-16 Hickory Hornets’ Boys’ Basketball Preview

Season in Review
In Bill Dzuricsko’s first season back at the helm of Hickory basketball, the Hornets struggled to a 3-19 finish which was their first losing season since 2005-06 (11-13) and matched the most losses in a year since 1997-98 (4-19).

Senior forward Brandon Rhoades was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder. Freshman Brandon Beader finished second on the team with a 13.2 scoring average. As coach Dzuricsko points out it was a season of learning for his young team. “Last year, (we had) three freshmen, a sophomore and a junior playing significant roles. We hope that the experience that they gained will pay dividends in the near future.”

Key Returnees
Senior Ryan Laverty is back after averaging 7.4 points and 2.9 rebounds last winter. The team also will welcome back his classmate Joey Dejulia who last year played in 20 games. Dzuricsko likes his ability, “He’ll provide (us with) senior leadership, speed, defense and depth. He’s been an outstanding wide receiver for the Hornet football team.” Anthony Nardone is also expected back after missing last year with an injury. “(Anthony) provides us with rebounding, defense and intensity inside the paint,” indicates Dzuricsko. “He’s an outstanding lineman for the football team.” Joining the group of seniors is junior Cameron Pica (2.5 ppg, 1.1 rpg), Brandon Beader (13.2 ppg), Jon Walsh (2.4 ppg, 1.9 apg), and Antonio Shannonhouse-Blackwell (2.8 ppg, 1.3 apg).
