NEW WILMINGTON, Pennsylvania (WKBN) – Hickory defends their crown as the Hornets have won five straight district championships by defeating Sharon 32-19 this afternoon. Hickory avenged their week two (Sept. 11) loss to the Tigers 35-34.
The Hornets saw three of their first four drives end in touchdowns. Hickory scored the game’s first 20 points. Sharon began the game with four straight offensive possessions with three plays from scrimmage (one ended in an interception). The Hornets’ tallied over 400 total yards of offense which saw Chuck Carr go for over 275 rushing yards. The Hornets’ Carr scored three touchdowns and passed DeShawn Coleman’s 2011 (2393) single season rushing mark in school history.
Sharon struggled with asserting themselves on the ground by only average about 2 yards per carry. The Tigers fall to 10-2 as their season comes to a close. Sharon’s quarterback Andrew Tomko broke two county records on the day. He threw his 29th touchdown on the season (a Mercer County record) and he also became the first player to throw for over 2,500 yards for a season in the county.
Hickory (11-1) will now move onto the PIAA Class AA State Quarterfinals next weekend where they’ll meet Central Martinsburg.
