AKRON, Ohio (AP) – Authorities say an Akron police officer has shot and wounded a man who jumped into a patrol car and nearly struck an officer.
A police spokesman said officers were sent to an Akron home on Friday to check on a 22-year-old man who was reportedly armed and possibly suicidal. The spokesman says officers began chasing the man on foot after they saw him running from the home. After officers lost sight of him, the man jumped into a cruiser parked on a nearby street. When officers ran to the cruiser, the man drove backward and nearly struck an officer. An officer fired an undisclosed number of rounds, striking the man once in the shoulder.
Police say the man is hospitalized in stable condition. The 16-year veteran officer is on paid administrative leave.
