STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – Brothers Rusty and Sandy, two yellow lab mixes, are up for adoption at New Lease on Life in Struthers.
“Rusty and Sandy have been with us for about four months,” Maria Guyan said.
The duo have been passed over by several people for two reasons: they need to be adopted together and they were born blind.
Paula Merolillo has been keeping a close eye on Rusty and Sandy from Facebook posts online.
Like these two, Merolillo’s dog is also blind. Her family adopted ReeDus a year ago.
“It wasn’t our first intention, but I saw him and it was love at first sight,” she said.
Merolillo says there are a lot of misconceptions about having an animal who’s blind.
“ReeDus has no limitations in his own mind. He became acclimated with the home inside and outside very quickly.”
The dog did have an adjustment period when he came home, but Merolillo says with the amount of resources available in the community, ReeDus acts just like any other dog.
“Rescue dogs are the best dogs. As far as them being blind, don’t let that be intimidating,” she said. “There are a lot of resources in the community.”
At New Lease on Life, Rusty and Sandy are still waiting for a family. Their adoption fees have already been sponsored, which means a family won’t have to pay to take the two of them home.
