2015-16 Ursuline Boys’ Basketball Preview

2015-16 Ursuline Fighting Irish Boys Basketball Preview
Head Coach: Keith Gunther, 13th season
Record: 23-5
5-Year Winning Percentage: 65.1%

Season in Review
Ursuline got through the Division III Warren District by defeating their opposition by an average of 73 to 31 before eliminating Canton Central Catholic (55-45) and eventually falling to Villa Angela-St. Joseph (once again) in the Regional Final (66-45).

The Irish have now posted winning seasons in each of the last five campaigns.

Mark Hughes scored over 22 points, 11 rebounds and averaged 5 assists per outing in 2014-15. The 6’4 guard – a Starting Five recipient and a 1,000-point scorer – is currently Wright State’s sixth man as a freshman. Last spring, Hughes was named to the First-Team All-State.

Key Returnees
Coach Keith Gunther likes what he has returning despite the loss of a player such as Mark Hughes. “Mark was an incredible leader,” points out Gunther. “He was able to keep the pressure on the opponent – he rebounded, he defended and scored. We’re trying to find someone else who can do the same. We think we have a kid – Greg Parella – who can put that same pressure on other teams. (Greg’s) has a great preseason. He was our second leading scorer a year ago. Mike Hughes – Mark’s younger brother – will also have a big role for us.”

The Irish return six letter winners as they’ll return to Division II after competing the past twelve seasons in Division III. “When I took the job,” recalls Gunther. “I said that we would compete with high level competition. The schedule we have in front of us each year is a major key to our success.” Gunther is hopeful to see progress from a few of his standouts in this coming season. “We’ll have good guard play this year. We expect big things from (Gianni) Quattro and (Vince) Venzeio. (Junior power forward) Armon Nasseri has improved immensely. We have a few kids coming over from the football team so we expect them to take maybe two to three weeks to get where they need to be in basketball shape.”
