Struthers pipe yard fire causes fuel, fluid spill

STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – A piece of equipment caught fire at a Struthers pipe yard, leading to the leakage of over 100 gallons of fluid.

Struthers Fire Chief Gary Mudryk said that a heavy piece of machinery at Lally Pipe and Tube in Struthers caught fire just before 10 a.m. Monday. A Lally employee called the fire department, who got backup from the Campbell Fire Department.

A hazardous materials team came to the scene because the machine leaked 50 gallons of diesel fuel and 60 gallons of hydraulic fluid. Some people at the scene were concerned because the fire department used 1,000 gallons of water, and there aren’t any drains on the property, which sits next to the Mahoning River. So, as a precaution, the street department came and dumped sand to contain the fuel spill.

The EPA was also notified and approved the plan, according to Mudryk.

Mudryk said they have not determined a cause yet, nor a damage estimate.

No one was working on the machine at the time, and the fire did not injure anyone.
