YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Did you know that nearly one quarter of all donations to charities are given in December?

Some are now referring to the Tuesday after Thanksgiving as “Giving Tuesday,” a way of off-setting all the commercialism of Black Friday and Cyber Money with some selflessness.

In conjunction with that, the United Way is kicking off the season at the Salvation Army on Glenwood Avenue.

The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley has joined #GivingTuesday. If you’re interested in learning more about either charity, check out the website for the United Way and for the Salvation Army.

On Tuesday, as part of a telethon at WKBN during the 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts, the United Way raised $5,600 with the help of 15 volunteers.
