Counselor gives tips on talking to children about tragedies

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – With tragedies such as the shooting at a California social services center on Wednesday and last week at a Colorado Planned Parenthood, it can be hard to talk to your kids about what they may be seeing or hearing in the news.

Suzanne Rintala, a counselor at Turning Point Counseling, sat down with WKBN’s Dave Sess to talk about what parents can do to ease their children’s fears.

Rintala recommended turning off the television around young children but sitting down to talk about the incidents with older ones.

“Open up a discussion. Ask them about what they heard. Normalize that everyone is afraid,” she said.

Rintala said it is also a good idea to talk about the heroes and police officers and firefighters that are working to keep everyone safe.

She said, although it is possible that another mass shooting may occur, there is no way to prepare emotionally.

“Is it probable that it’s going to happen here? Probably not. And that’s the only way that we can prepare,” she said.
