Judge blocks appointee to Youngstown Schools commission

The Youngstown Education Association says it is considering legal action with the appointment of Carol Staten to Youngstown City Schools' Academic Distress Commission.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A judge has temporarily blocked an appointee to the academic distress commission overseeing the troubled Youngstown City Schools after teachers’ unions argued she wasn’t a current teacher.

In a decision Wednesday, Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Lou D’Apolito prevented Carol Staten from joining the commission until a hearing is held Dec. 14.

Staten is a relative of Youngstown Board of Education President Brenda Kimble and doesn’t currently teach in the district.

The Ohio Education Association and Youngstown Education Association argued in opposing Staten’s appointment that Ohio law requires at least one of the board president’s appointees to be a teacher employed by the district.

The dispute comes as a larger legal challenge is under way to a new Ohio law allowing a powerful CEO to eventually take over the district.
