Developer planning new student housing on YSU campus

On Thursday, the YSU's Board of Trustees approved the leasing of nearly two acres of property on the corner of Lincoln and Wick avenues to LRC Realty of Akron for student housing.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – More brand-new student housing could be coming to the Youngstown State University campus.

On Thursday, the YSU’s Board of Trustees approved the leasing of nearly two acres of property on the corner of Lincoln and Wick avenues to LRC Realty of Akron.

YSU spokesman Ron Cole said the developer approached YSU about building a five-story structure. As part of the plan, the first floor would be devoted to retail and the top four floors would be used for student housing.

Cole said it is a mystery as to what exactly would go on the first floor.

“It’ll be interesting to watch as this develops to see what kind of retail comes in there. Maybe we’ll have a coffee shop, maybe a restaurant something like that,” he said.

Cole said more student housing options are needed on campus.

“Our university residence halls are currently at capacity this year, and our residency overall is up about 14 percent. So, we have a growing need for housing on campus, and we see that need and demand grow even more in the years ahead,” he said.

The complex, which would be privately owned and operated, still needs to be approved by the state. Cole said that could take a few months.

He believes the new complex would not only attract more students, but people to downtown.
