Cafaro Co. records seized from Niles City Hall

Eastwood Mall in Niles

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – State and federal agents seized several records from Niles City Hall related to the Eastwood Mall Complex, which is owned by Cafaro Company, on Thursday.

The FBI, Ohio Bureau of Investigation and the State Auditor’s Office participated in the search Thursday at the Niles city offices regarding an ongoing investigation, according to Ohio Attorney General’s Office Spokesman Dan Tierney.

According to a receipt given to city officials, investigators took drawings and blueprints related to the Hampton Inn, new Cafaro Headquarters, Residence Inn and Area Agency on Aging 11 Incorporated.

Documents related to construction plans for Lariccia’s Italian Marketplace were also taken, but they say they have no such plans.

A spokesperson for Lariccia’s Italian Marketplace says the company has never filed any construction plans with the City of Niles. The company is now investigating to see if someone filed plans without its knowledge.

Ohio BCI also searched the Cafaro Company headquarters and another Cafaro-owned building Thursday as part of a separate ongoing investigation, Tierney said.

The records of the searches are sealed under a judge’s order.

On Monday, WKBN reached out to the Cafaro Company. A Cafaro Company spokesman said they’re aware of the search but aren’t sure what the agents are looking for.
