MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) – The FBI processed two background checks for firearms per second on Black Friday, the most ever in one day.
The second highest on record was a week after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary.
Since May of this year gun sales have been at an all time high according to the FBI.
The Bureau processed 2,243,030 checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System in November, an increase of 236,111 checks over the previous record set in 2012. Background checks have continually set monthly records since May.
“Our busiest time of the year is the holidays because people are buying gifts,” said Dana Tackett, Miami Valley Shooting Grounds owner.
Tackett has owned the Miami Valley Shooting Grounds for nine years and used to work in law enforcement. He says they could barely keep up with business on Black Friday and since then things have not slowed down.
Tackett believes the recent spike in sales is because people are scared.
“People are concerned about their safety with whats going on in the world, It gives us an uneasy feeling, feeling insecure and makes us want to protect our loved ones,” said Tackett.
Tackett says that after the Paris attacks and the San Bernardino shooting, he expects business to keep increasing,
“We’re booked out until February right now, we’re having to add classes to accommodate people,” said Tackett.
Tackett says if people are serious about learning how to defend themselves, gun education is critical.
“Owning a firearm is a responsibility, buying it is a right, owning it is a responsibility.” You have to manage it you have to keep it in a safe place,” said Tackett.
