Sheriff: Ohio deputy charged in neighbor’s fatal shooting

WAVERLY, Ohio (AP) – A sheriff says one of his deputies has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in a neighbor’s fatal shooting at the deputy’s home.

Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader says the deputy was off-duty at the time of Thursday’s shooting. Reader says the Deputy Joel Jenkins apparently was showing off a gun and it fired, shooting a 40-year-old man in the head.

Messages left at the sheriff’s and prosecutor’s offices weren’t returned Friday. An Attorney General’s Office spokesman confirmed that the Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation. The office also will handle the prosecution.

Reader says Jenkins was taken to jail in Franklin County for his protection. It wasn’t known if he had an attorney yet.
