BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – For nearly two decades, Boardman Park has hosted a community Christmas celebration aimed at bringing everyone closer together, while enjoying the township’s green oasis.
“It’s our annual festivity that we use to celebrate the beginning of…the holiday season,” said Recreation Director Karen McCallum.
Some have made attending the event a family tradition. The Klanica family has been coming out for three years.
“We just love it. We think it’s a great thing for our family to do. A great thing to celebrate Christmas and to be in our beautiful Boardman Park that we appreciate so much,” Fran Klanica said.
Families and businesses help decorate the trees, making ornaments from things like birdseed, popcorn and peanut butter.
“They decorate the trees with edible arrangements for the animals here at the park to feast on throughout the winter months,” McCallum said.
The grand finale is the lighting of the community Christmas tree and holiday lights display.
With music and a visit from Santa, who arrives on a fire truck, it’s an opportunity for families to come together with other folks in the township.
“I think what’s most important about the holiday season is family and friends getting together, taking time to engage with your community and just have a sense of giving back,” said Nicole Pachol, another attendant.
The Boardman Park holiday light display can be viewed each night from 6-10 p.m.
