Cleanup underway after driver crashes into Girard pizza shop

Car crashes into Melfi's Pizza in Girard.

GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) – After a dramatic turn of events Sunday evening, Melfi and Santangelo’s Pizza Parlor on North State Street in Girard now has a hole in its side.

The owner, Girard Mayor Jim Melfi, says the driver reached speeds of 75 miles per hour.

“It’s a very sturdy building and for that to do that much damage, he had to be traveling at a high rate of speed,” Melfi said.

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers say that Weathersfield Township police tried pulling over the vehicle on the north end of town. They say the driver, who had a warrant, led the officer on a high-speed chase before crashing into the building.

Keith Adams was arrested after crashing into a Girard business over the weekend.

“Apparently, the suspect did apply the brakes. Tried to make a left turn onto Townsend (Avenue), but due to the excessive speed he was traveling, he didn’t make the curve,” said OSP Sgt. Patrick Abel.

“The fellow tried to evade police and he was tasered and arrested and brought to the hospital,” Melfi said.

The suspect, 19-year-old Keith Adams, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment.

He is facing a number of charges, including failing to comply with a police officer. He’s also being held on felony drug and weapons charges.

As for the pizza shop, it’ll be boarded up and, hopefully, back open by Tuesday.

“A hole in the wall will be fixed but at the rate of speed he was traveling, an innocent person could have lost their life tonight, and that’s totally ridiculous,” Melfi said.

OSP is investigating the crash, while Weathersfield Township police are investigating the suspect’s pursuit.
