NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – Tuesday, Trumbull County Judge Andrew Logan approved a request for a special prosecutor to oversee allegations of illegal activity by government officials and others in Niles.
According to a court order obtained by WKBN, Daniel Kasaris of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office will oversee the investigation, per the request of Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins. Potential charges in the case include tampering with evidence, theft in office, falsification and dereliction of duty.
The order did not specify who might be charged, simply calling them, “government officials and others.” The request for the appointment did contain the names of the targets of the investigation, but that petition was sealed by Judge Logan’s court order.
No one has been charged so far in the investigation, which the state auditor’s office and attorney general’s office have been working on since 2014.
The appointment follows a search of City of Niles government offices on Thursday by the FBI and BCI. Documents were also taken from the Cafaro Company offices in Youngstown that day, according to the attorney general’s office.
