Thunderbirds to return to Youngstown air base in 2017

VIENNA, Ohio (WKBN) – The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds announced plans Tuesday to bring their aerial demonstration team back to the Mahoning Valley for the 2017 Thunder Over the Valley Air Show on June 17-18.

The Air Force made the announcement official Sunday.

Earlier in 2015, the Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs office approved the Youngstown Air Reserve Station to host both events, but the air base waited for the release of the official Thunderbirds 2017 schedule to announce the open house and air show. Both events will be free and open to the public.

The air base will also host an open house in 2016 as a preview to 2017’s show. At that event, guests will be able to view and walk through military aircraft while experiencing a snapshot of the U.S. Armed Forces’ mission. Military ground vehicles, interactive displays and ground demonstrations are also expected to be available for viewing.

The Thunder Over the Valley Air Show last came to Youngstown in May 2014.
