YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The message was clear for local high school students: You are not born a winner, rather, it is about the choices you make.

Former New York Giants football player Jimmie Bell delivered that message to students at Youngstown East High School and Brookfield High School on Wednesday. He talked to the students to encourage them to make good choices.

His motto: You are not born a winner. You are not born a loser. You are born a chooser!

Bell stressed academic excellence, setting goals and controlling behavior.

“Youngstown has such an amazing, rich, strong, positive legacy, and also, I tell all the kids to fight for your dreams. That’s what fulfills our legacy,” Bell said.

The defensive lineman grew up on Youngstown’s north side and attended Ursuline High School. He played for The Ohio State University, where he was part of the Rose Bowl Champion Team of 1997 and where he earned two Big Ten Championships. He headed to the NFL in 1999, playing with the New York Giants and later the San Diego Chargers after playing in Europe.
