GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) – Lock your car doors if your car is parked outside at night.
Simple enough advice. In Girard, they hope you’ll heed it.
The Tribune Chronicle says at least four unlocked cars were broken into during this past weekend. Several other vehicles were hit over the course of a week in November, and 10 were reported in one day during October.
Giard Police Capt. John Norman said these types of break-ins are driving up the crime rate. He said it is important for the public to make reports for seemingly minor break-in incidents so patterns can be established, making it more likely a suspect can be caught.
The majority of the break-ins occur while an unlocked vehicle is parked overnight at a residential address, according to police reports. However, some of the criminals did break a window, use a coat hanger or cut the soft tops of Jeeps and convertibles to get at visible goods, police reports show.
That’s why Capt. Norman says he brings in all of his valuables from his car every night, even though it’s locked.
