JACKSON TWP., Ohio (WKBN) – An 18-year-old Brimfield Township man is in the Portage County jail after taking several police agencies on a 30-mile-long pursuit Saturday afternoon that ended at the turnpike interchange in Jackson Township.
Andrey Walsh is charged with fleeing and eluding, reckless operation and resisting arrest.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says Walsh drove as fast as 96 miles per hour on eastbound I-76, nearly causing an accident with a tractor-trailer rig near the Lake Milton bridge. He was able to avoid stop sticks, that troopers had put down to try and disable his pickup truck, twice.
The pursuit started in Brimfield Township near Kent when local police tried to pull Walsh over for an unspecified traffic violation. That’s when he headed toward I-76 east.
It ended when troopers boxed him in at a toll booth at the I-76/I-80 interchange. The state patrol says he voluntarily got out of the car, but began to resist while on the ground.
I-76 did remain open during the pursuit, but all police agencies did slow down and turn off their overhead lights after the near-collision with the big rig.
