NEW SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – The Springfield Township Police Department is making Christmas a little brighter this year, thanks to a Secret Santa. The anonymous donor gave the department $1,000 so ten children could shop with a cop.
After petting the K-9 officer and grabbing a bite to eat at the station, ten lucky Springfield Elementary students got to go on a shopping trip with a few of the officers.
They even got to ride to Dollar General in cruisers, where the shopping spree began, each with $100 to spend.
Nicholas had his list in hand and was ready to go, rattling off his items.
This is the first time Springfield Township has been able to take children shopping, treating them to something special just in time for Christmas.
“It was just a great feeling to see all of these kids get so excited,” Chief Matt Mohn said.
The children didn’t stop smiling; something that warms Mohn’s heart. He says he hopes it does much more for the kids, though.
“To build a good report with these little kids. Get these kids used to being with cops and let them know that we are their friends and we are here to help them.”
In addition to the presents, Dollar General gave each child a $10 gift card before they left.
As each child left the store today, the officers hoped for one thing:
“To put an extra smile on these children’s faces and see them have a Happy Holidays and a Merry Christmas,” Mohn said.
According to Nicholas, “This is the best Christmas ever.”
