PARIS TWP., Ohio (AP) – The Ohio State Highway Patrol says a passenger died in a fiery single-car crash in Portage County early Saturday. The driver was seriously injured after being ejected before the vehicle caught fire.
The Ravenna post of the state patrol says no names are being released pending the results of lab tests to positively identify the person killed.
Troopers say the crash occurred around 2:40 a.m. Saturday on Route 225 in Paris Township, about halfway between I-76 and Route 5.
Two people were in a 2004 Nissan Titan when it went off the right side of the road, striking a tree. The driver was ejected and taken to the hospital.
Troopers say the car then caught fire, killing the passenger trapped inside.
The patrol says investigators believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. They say the car was speeding.
The crash remains under investigation.
