FAIRFIELD, Ohio (AP) – The family of a teen who killed herself last year has filed a lawsuit alleging her southwest Ohio school district knew she was bullied, but did little to stop it.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports (http://cin.ci/1UsAPkD) that 13-year-old Emilie Olsen’s family recently filed the federal wrongful death lawsuit against the Fairfield City School District. A district spokeswoman says the district will defend against the litigation, but declined to comment further.
The lawsuit says the Asian-American girl was bullied at school for years because of her race, national origin, gender and other factors. The lawsuit alleges that led to depression, and she “ultimately” killed herself.
The family alleges they pleaded with the school to help curb the bullying. The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages and reforms to the district’s policies on bullying.
