LOWELLVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) – There’s a new head football coach at Lowellville. Former YSU standout running back and Youngstown East Head Coach P.J. Mays has been officially approved to take over the program.
At a school board meeting Wednesday night, Mays was unanimously approved. He was joined by friends and family as he was welcomed to the post. Mays will certainly have his work cut out for him. The Rockets have just one winning season over the last 12 years. But Mays can’t wait to change that trend.
“It’s a challenge, you know. you never want the kids to not be successful,” Mays said. “You always want them to have some growth upon each year. We want to build one of the more exciting brands of football here. We got a great group of kids that are tough, that can play hard.”
Lowellville Athletic Director Brian Fedyski couldn’t be happier with the new hire.
“I’ve known P.J. since he was a player at Youngstown East and his years at Youngstown State playing for Coach Tressel and Coach Heacock,” Fedyski said. “And then just through the coaching circuit that we have, it’s a great fraternity and I’ve known P.J. But i’m looking forward to knowing him even closer and working with him.”
