YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown State University Trustees approved the leasing of vacant land to LRC Realty of Akron, who plans to build student housing on the corner Lincoln and Wick avenues.
The company built similar student housing last year at the University of Akron. It plans to build a five-story apartment building, with space on the first floor for retail.
The state will still have to approve the project, but YSU President Jim Tressel doesn’t expect any problems.
“I think it really creates the on-campus student experience atmosphere,” he said. “Young people like new, and it’s good to have new things in the hopper.”
It is the second public-private campus development approved by YSU this year. In October, ground was broken for a 162-bed student apartment building along Rayen Avenue, between Fifth and Belmont avenues.
The project, led by Hallmark Campus Communities of Columbus, is expected to be open for the state of the fall semester 2016.
Also at Wednesday’s meeting, Dr. Charles Bush, a retired cardiac thoracic surgeon and a YSU alumnus, was sworn in as the YSU Trustee. He will serve for the next nine years.
