Suspected thief jumps escalator at Dayton Macy’s

A suspected thief falls from an escalator in Dayton, Ohio as he runs from police.

MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WHIO) – Surveillance video shows a man fleeing police and then jumping off an escalator, falling head first. The man and his sister are accused of trying to steal from a Macy’s Miami Township.

Marcel Wallace, 21, tried to make a run for it.

“As he tried to go down the up escalator, there was a uniformed Miami Township police officer coming up the escalator,” said Capt. John Magill.

And when there was nowhere to run, he jumped.

“The officer tried to catch him, got a hold of his legs, tried to hold on to him. The man kicked at the officer and fell, landed on his head,” Magill said.

Minutes earlier, police say Wallace was caught switching price tags at Macy’s. He had his sister, a cashier at the store, ring up three coats valued at $620 for $26.

“Years and years ago, back when I was a kid, we didn’t have stuff that happened like this. I mean, yeah, there were robberies and things that happened but not on the percentage that it is today,” said Ron Siler, shopper.

Wallace and his sister, 19-year-old Jessica Wallace, are looking at misdemeanor theft charges, but Magill said that could change.

“Use force and flee and someone becomes injured, that could potentially be a felony,” Magill said.

Wallace was not seriously injured in the fall.
